About Us

Apprenticeship Training

The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) is a trade union that has proudly represented operating engineers and stationary engineers since 1896. IUOE apprenticeship programs provide a proven pathway into the skilled trades—combining hands-on experience, classroom instruction, and long-term career opportunity. Most importantly, IUOE apprenticeship places participants on a clear career track with opportunities for advancement, stability, and lifelong skill development.

Earn While You Learn

As an IUOE apprentice, you earn while you learn—receiving competitive wages and benefits while gaining valuable skills on the job. Training takes place at more than 100 local union training centers throughout the United States and Canada, as well as at the International Training & Education Center (ITEC)—one of the most advanced training facilities of its kind.

IUOE apprenticeship programs prepare members for careers as:

  • Operating Engineers — who work as heavy equipment operators, mechanics, and surveyors in construction, pipeline, energy, and industrial environments.
  • Stationary Engineers — who operate and maintain the mechanical systems that keep buildings, campuses, and industrial facilities running safely and efficiently
