The GPS Program Manager is responsible for supporting and advancing Marathon’s construction technology and layout initiatives across electrical construction projects throughout the Southeast. This role provides field support, implementation guidance, training, and operational oversight for GPS and robotic layout systems to promote safe, accurate, and efficient project execution.
You will serve as a key connection between engineering drawings, the BIM team, and field installation crews, partnering with Superintendents and Project Managers on commercial, healthcare, industrial, and mission-critical projects across the Southeast. This role is responsible for helping coordinate GPS and construction layout needs across Marathon’s projects while providing support, training, and guidance to Field Layout Technicians to help ensure accurate layout information, proactive project readiness, and efficient project execution.
Management Overview
• Assist project teams with initial GPS/layout setup and implementation on new projects
• Provide hands-on training and support for field personnel using GPS and robotic layout equipment
• Troubleshoot equipment, software, and layout workflow issues across active jobsites
• Build and help maintain consistency in layout procedures, file organization, and equipment standards across projects
• Coordinate with BIM, VDC, and project teams to ensure layout files and field data are accurate and up to date
• Mentor field employees interested in GPS/layout technology and advanced construction systems
• Perform all onsite layout for mechanical and electrical systems — line-and-grade, horizontal control, benchmarks, and equipment pads
• Set up, calibrate, and operate Topcon robotic total stations, GNSS receivers, and data collectors with MAGNET Field
• Assist the Field Layout Technicians with downloading and processing design files (DWG, RVT) into layout software; verify coordinate systems and project control points.
• Assist the Field Layout Technician with confirming and maintaining site benchmarks and control networks throughout the project lifecycle
Quality Control & Accuracy
• Ensure all layout adheres to project tolerances, QC requirements, and applicable codes (ASME, ANSI, local AHJ)
• Conduct pre-installation checks and post-installation surveys to verify installed work matches design intent
• Interface with clients' surveyors and owner's representatives to resolve tolerance conflicts and constructability issues
Safety & Project Coordination
• Champion a culture of safety on the jobsite — participate in daily briefings, toolbox talks, and job hazard analyses
• Collaborate with Superintendents, Foremen, and other trades to coordinate layout schedules and minimize conflicts
• Train and mentor Instrument Men and layout assistants in equipment operation and layout procedures
• Assist in reviewing submittals, shop drawings, and coordination drawings for layout feasibility
Education & Experience
• High School Diploma or GED required; Associate Degree in Construction Management or related field is beneficial. Experience in lieu of education is accepted.
• 2+ years of field layout experience in mechanical, civil, or electrical construction
• Experience communicating information among multiple trades on construction projects strongly preferred
• Detail-oriented with a commitment to precision
• Valid driver's license
Topcon Equipment Experience preferred
• Robotic total stations
